Drug Uses
Ultracet is a medication that relieves pain. It is purposed to treat moderate, acute pain such as pain due to surgical procedures, including dental surgery. This drug can be also used for other conditions, but only if prescribed by your doctor.
How Taken
Ultracet is purposed for oral use. Read carefully the directions on the prescription label. Take the tablets with water. If you have any stomach problems, you can combine Ultracet with food or milk. You should no take more than 2 tablets at a time or more than 8 tablets per day. Bigger doses can lead to severe side effects. You should not take more drugs than prescribed by your doctor.
Warnings/Precautions
YOU MUST NOT TAKE Ultracet IF YOU HAVE EVER HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION to codeine. It includes a severe rash, breathing difficulties, hives, or dizziness. CONTACT YOUR PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY IF YOU EXPERIENCE tightness of chest, breathing difficulties, swelling of eyelids, face or lips or if you develop a rash or hives. You should not take more than the prescribed doses, unless instructed by your doctor. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take Ultracet for longer period of time than prescribed. YOU MAY GET ADDICTED to Ultracet. Be careful when driving or working with machines. DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL DURING treatment with Ultracet. YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE other products containing acetaminophen (check labels closely) while you are taking Ultracet. IF YOU FEEL DIZZY, try to sit or stand up slowly. It is essential BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, to inform the doctor that you are taking Ultracet. IN CASE YOU EXPERIENCE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS (sweating, nervousness, nausea, tremor, diarrhea, trouble sleeping), contact your doctor. You should also discuss with your doctor if you have any plans to become pregnant. Ultracet IS KNOWN TO PASS INTO BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking Ultracet.
Missed Dose
If it happens to miss a dose, take it as soon as you notice. If it is already time for the next one, skip the forgotten one and go back to your usual dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
The most common side effects may include:
difficulty breathing, changes in vision; shortness of breath; hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that are not really there); fast or irregular heartbeat; not passing urine as often as usual; blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth; redness, skin rash, seizures (convulsions);, itching; yellow tint to your skin or whites of your eyes.
Other possible side effects are: agitation; anxiety, vomiting.
There can appear also symptoms that are usually not serious and do not require medical attention, although it is best to inform your doctor, especially in case they become persistent or bothersome: difficulty sleeping; constipation or diarrhea; dizziness, dry mouth; drowsiness; false sense of well being, mood changes; feeling of unreality, headache; itching; indigestion; nausea; sweating or flushing.
Storage
Make sure the drug is out of reach of children and it is kept in a container that cannot be open by small children. Keep at normal room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). You should throw the medicine if it is expired or no longer needed.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, find instant medical help. Overdose symptoms may include: vomiting; nausea; sweating; difficulty breathing; shallow weak breathing; and seizures.
More Information
As Ultracet may cause dizziness or drowsiness, be cautious when driving, working with machines, or performing other hazardous activities. Avoid these activities in case you feel dizzy or drowsy. During the treatment with Ultracet, do not use other other prescription or over-the-counter medicines containing acetaminophen (Tylenol, pain relievers, cold and flu medicines, others). The use of too much acetaminophen may lead to harmful effects. You should avoid tranquilizers, sleeping pills, sedatives and antihistamines unless under the supervision of your physician. Ultracet may lead to drowsiness and these agents may contribute for the worsening of this effect.
