Drug Uses
Fioricet is a mixture of barbiturate sedative and a non-aspirin pain medication and caffeine. It is a non-narcotic pain medication and relaxant and it is used to relieve headaches caused by contractions of the muscles in the neck and shoulder area, and migraine.
How Taken
Fioricet is produced in capsules and tablets for oral use. It should be taken one or two tablets on every 4 hours as prescribed. The daily dosage should not be more than 6 tablets. You should not take this drug for longer periods as you may develop physical dependence.
Warnings/Precautions
It is possible to feel dizzy or drowsy during treatment. That is why, it is important to observe your reactions to this medicine and be cautious when driving, operating machines or performing other dangerous activities that require full attention. Inform your doctor if you have suffered from severe depression or drug abuse. Fioricet should be carefully used in cases of any kidney or liver problems, severe abdominal trouble, if you feel weak or you are an old person. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. This drug may be harmful for a developing baby. It also passes into into breast milk. If you have a great need of this medication, your doctor may give you instructions to stop breastfeeding your baby until your treatment is over.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember if it is not later than 1 hour. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects can not be predicted. You should contact your doctor if you have any doubts of any signs of side effects. Your physician will give you further instructions and advise you whether to continue taking Fioricet. Common side effects are: breath shortness, abdominal pain, light-headedness, dizziness, intoxicated feeling, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and sedation. Rare but still possible side effects are also: allergic reactions hot spells,, heavy eyelids, depression, exaggerated feeling of well-being, shaky feeling, excessive urination, excitement, stuffy nose, fainting, sluggishness, fatigue, earache, fever, flatulence, headache, excessive sweating, agitation,dry mouth, constipation, high energy, itching, leg pain, mental confusion, heartburn, muscle fatigue, numbness, difficulty swallowing, rapid heartbeat, ringing in the ears, seizure, skin redness and/or peeling, tingling.
Storage
Keep below 86° F (30° C); dispense in a tight container and out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdosing with Fioricet, or any combination of this drug with alcohol or other central nervous system depressant, can cause unconsciousness or even death. Overdose symptoms include: shortness of breath, unusually slow heartbeat, severe drowsiness, extreme weakness, lack of coordination, hallucination, too slow or troubled breathing, confusionvomiting with blood, slurred speech.
More Information
Fioricet should not be if you have used monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. There can appear dangerous side effects. Fioricet is known to increase the effects of other drugs that cause including antidepressants, drowsiness, antihistamines, alcohol, sedatives (used to treat insomnia), anxiety medicines, other pain relievers, and muscle relaxants. Your doctor should be informed about all other dugs that you are taking and you should not take any without his permission.
